NordWhisper: NordVPN’s New Protocol for Restricted Network
NordVPN has introduced NordWhisper, a new protocol designed to bypass networks that block VPN connections. Unlike traditional VPN traffic, which can be detected by network administrators, NordWhisper operates differently to provide a smoother and more reliable browsing experience in places with strict internet security, such as airports, cafes, offices, and schools.
The protocol uses web tunnel technology to disguise VPN connections as regular internet traffic, making it harder for advanced network filters to detect. A similar technique was introduced by the Tor Project for its Tor Browser in March 2024. However, NordVPN notes that NordWhisper may be slower than regular VPN connections and should only be used when standard VPNs are blocked.
The rollout of NordWhisper has started on Windows, Android, and Linux, with more platforms to be supported over time. No release date has been announced, but users will be able to enable it in the NordVPN app’s connection settings once available.
“This is not just about bypassing restrictions,” said NordVPN CTO Marijus Briedis. “It’s about giving people the freedom to work, communicate, and access essential services securely, even in the most restricted environments.”
