BIR Breaks Records: E-Payment Collections Soar Past ₱2 Trillion

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) is experiencing a transformative era as it embraces digitalization, with e-payment collections exceeding ₱2 trillion in 2023. This milestone marks a significant shift in taxpayer behavior, as more Filipinos opt for the convenience and efficiency of the BIR’s e-services.

During the launch of the 2025 National Tax Campaign at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City, BIR officials announced that e-payment collections from January to October 2023 reached ₱2.06 trillion, representing approximately 85 percent of the agency’s total collections during that period.

BIR Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr. highlighted the success of the agency’s digital transformation, stating, “The BIR's digital transformation is proving successful, with an increasing number of users adopting our e-services, particularly online payments.” This shift to digital platforms reflects the BIR’s commitment to modernizing its systems and making tax compliance more accessible and efficient for taxpayers. The surge in e-payments also underscores the growing trust and confidence of Filipinos in the agency’s digital infrastructure.

The 2025 National Tax Campaign, launched under the theme “Bayanihan para sa Buwis: Sama-sama, Tulong-tulong,” aims to emphasize the critical role of taxpayers in driving the country’s economic recovery and development. Lumagui stressed that timely and accurate tax payments are essential for funding vital public services and infrastructure projects. “Taxes—often perceived as a burden—are essential for our society’s growth. They fund education, support healthcare, and maintain the infrastructure we depend on,” he said. “Taxes represent investments in our future and the legacy we leave for the next generation.”

Lumagui also called for greater transparency and accountability within the tax system, urging all citizens to contribute their fair share to national development. “This ensures an equitable distribution of the tax burden, leaving no one behind,” he added. The BIR’s efforts to promote fairness and inclusivity in taxation are aligned with its broader goal of fostering a culture of compliance and responsibility among taxpayers.

As the 2025 National Tax Campaign gains momentum, Lumagui encouraged Filipinos to embrace integrity and accountability in their tax practices. “Let’s embrace integrity and accountability as we strive for a more just society. Our contributions, regardless of size, play a crucial role in shaping our nation's future,” he said. The campaign seeks to inspire a collective sense of duty and patriotism, reminding taxpayers that their contributions are vital to the country’s progress and prosperity.

The BIR’s digital transformation and the success of its e-payment initiatives are testaments to the agency’s adaptability and responsiveness to the evolving needs of taxpayers. By leveraging technology, the BIR has not only streamlined tax collection processes but also enhanced taxpayer convenience and satisfaction. This digital shift is expected to continue driving growth in e-payment collections, further solidifying the BIR’s role as a key player in the nation’s economic development.

As the Philippines moves forward, the BIR’s commitment to innovation, transparency, and accountability will remain central to its mission. The 2025 National Tax Campaign serves as a reminder that every taxpayer’s contribution, no matter how small, is a building block for a brighter and more prosperous future for all Filipinos.
