Filipino music icon Freddie Aguilar, known for his timeless song “Anak”, has passed away at the age of 72 while confined at the Philippine Heart Center. The news was confirmed by Atty. George Briones, general counsel of Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), where Aguilar once served as national executive vice president.

While the exact cause of death was not disclosed, Aguilar had previously asked for prayers through a Facebook post dated May 20, signaling he had been facing health challenges. His partner, Jovie Albao, had also posted updates, expressing her gratitude for the support and well-wishes they received. “A lot has happened this week. There were many emotional moments, but I must not be weak. I need to be strong to take care of him,” she wrote in a heartfelt post on May 21.

In a subsequent post, Albao shared a photo taken at the Philippine Heart Center, with the caption: “Stay strong; things will get better. It may be stormy now, but it can’t rain forever.” She also assured the public that Freddie was in good hands and receiving the necessary medical care. While she kept most details private, she emphasized that everything shared publicly was in accordance with Aguilar’s wishes.

Aguilar is survived by his wife Jovie and four children from a previous marriage: Maegan, Jonan, Isabella, and Jeriko.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Original Pilipino Music (OPM), Freddie Aguilar rose to global fame in the 1970s with “Anak”, a song that resonated deeply with listeners for its heartfelt story of a parent’s love for a wayward child. The song was translated into 51 languages, released in more than 50 countries, and re-recorded in over 100 different versions.

Aside from “Anak”, Aguilar’s discography includes other socially aware tracks such as “Katarungan,” “Magdalena,” “Pangako,” and “Luzviminda.” His unique voice, iconic long hair often paired with a beret or newsboy cap, and ever-present guitar made him a memorable figure on stage and beyond.

Aguilar’s artistry was not confined to music alone. His passion for social issues led him to participate in politics. He was a prominent supporter of former President Rodrigo Duterte’s 2016 presidential campaign. After Duterte’s victory, Aguilar was appointed as a presidential adviser on culture and the arts. He also became an active advocate for federalism in the Philippines and was involved with the PFP party list, pushing for systemic change in governance.

Tributes have poured in following the news of his passing. Actress Vivian Velez was among the many public figures who expressed sorrow, stating, “Our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. His music will forever live on in our hearts.”

Freddie Aguilar’s passing marks the end of an era for Filipino music. His contributions to the OPM industry, both as an artist and a cultural icon, have left a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.
