A U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet, valued at $60 million, fell overboard from the USS Harry S. Truman during operations in the Red Sea. The incident occurred while the aircraft was being towed in the hangar bay. One sailor sustained minor injuries, and an investigation is underway.

On April 28, 2025, a U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet fighter jet, valued at approximately $60 million, was lost at sea after falling overboard from the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman during operations in the Red Sea.
According to official statements, the incident occurred while the aircraft was being towed in the hangar bay. The move crew lost control of the jet, resulting in both the aircraft and its tow tractor going overboard. One sailor sustained minor injuries during the mishap. The Navy has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the loss.
The USS Harry S. Truman is currently deployed in the Red Sea as part of ongoing U.S. military operations targeting Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. The carrier has been conducting daily airstrikes since March 15, 2025, in response to Houthi attacks on regional shipping lanes.
This incident marks the second loss of a Super Hornet from the Truman's strike group during its current deployment. In December 2024, another F/A-18 was accidentally shot down by the USS Gettysburg in a friendly fire incident.
Despite the recent mishap, the Navy has confirmed that the Truman Carrier Strike Group and its embarked air wing remain fully operational and mission-capable.
