Vehicle Plows Into Filipino Street Party in Canada, Leaving Multiple Dead
Tragedy struck the Lapu-Lapu Street Festival in Vancouver as an SUV drove into the crowd, killing several and injuring many. The Filipino community mourns the loss during what was meant to be a celebration of heritage.

In a devastating incident that has shocked communities both in Canada and the Philippines, an SUV plowed into a crowd attending the Lapu-Lapu Street Festival in Vancouver on Sunday, April 27, killing several people and injuring dozens more. Authorities are currently investigating the tragedy, which unfolded during what was meant to be a joyful celebration of Filipino culture.
The event, which drew hundreds of attendees from the Filipino community and beyond, was in full swing when a dark-colored SUV suddenly veered off the road and into festivalgoers at around 3:45 PM local time. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and horror as people screamed and ran for safety. Multiple victims were struck, and emergency services arrived quickly to tend to the injured and transport them to nearby hospitals.
According to the Vancouver Police Department, several people were declared dead at the scene, with at least 15 others injured—some critically. Police have taken the male driver into custody and stated that he is cooperating with the investigation. While no motive has been confirmed, authorities are not ruling out any possibilities, including impaired driving or a deliberate act.
“This is a heartbreaking day for our community,” said Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim in a press conference. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this senseless tragedy.”
The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver expressed deep sorrow over the incident and confirmed that it is coordinating with local authorities to provide assistance to Filipino nationals affected by the crash. “We are closely monitoring the situation and ready to provide consular and welfare assistance,” said Consul General Arlene Magno.
The Lapu-Lapu Festival, named after the Filipino hero who resisted Spanish colonization, is an annual event celebrating Filipino heritage through music, dance, food, and community activities. What was meant to be a vibrant display of cultural pride quickly turned into a scene of mourning.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. also issued a statement offering condolences to the victims’ families. “We stand with our fellow Filipinos in Vancouver. This tragedy has caused us great pain. We are committed to ensuring that support and justice are extended to all those affected.”
As investigators comb through video footage and witness accounts, the public has been urged to avoid speculation and allow the authorities to complete their inquiry. Police have not confirmed whether terrorism is suspected, but officials emphasized that there is currently no ongoing threat to public safety.
The tragedy has sparked outpourings of grief and support on social media, with the hashtags #VancouverTragedy and #LapuLapuFestival trending in Canada and the Philippines. Candlelight vigils are being planned by community leaders to honor those who lost their lives.
As the city mourns, both Canadian and Filipino communities remain united in grief, seeking answers and justice after a day of celebration turned into one of sorrow.
