DILG: EDSA bus lane phase-out expected; bikes and motorcycles to share the lanes

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has said that the government intends to progressively phase out the EDSA bus lanes when the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) expands its user capacity. According to Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla, bus lanes would be eliminated since the MRT's capacity is anticipated to increase from 300,000 daily users to 800,000 within the year.

Additionally, because motorcycles are heavier and often go quicker than bicycles, DILG plans to "modify" EDSA's bike lanes to let motorcyclists to share them. According to Remulla, motorbikes attempting to evade traffic are involved in the majority of traffic accidents. He stated that the objective is to increase the effectiveness of public transportation in order to deter the usage of private vehicles.

Although advocates of transport reform, like as the Move As One Coalition, urge for better transportation decisions, the Department of transit (DOTr) backs the busway, claiming it has been effective and intends to expand it throughout Metro Manila. The proposal to remove the busway will be investigated, but plans to expand the EDSA bus lanes to the northern, eastern, and southern regions of the NCR will proceed, according to DOTr Undersecretary Jesus Ferdinand Ortega. Multiple authorities will also do more research on the plan to combine the bike and motorbike lanes.
