Filipino Doctor in US Found Guilty of $20.7M Health Care Fraud
Filipino-Canadian doctor Alexander Baldonado was convicted of a $20.7M health care fraud scheme in the US, involving fake Medicare billings and unnecessary lab tests.
NEW YORK — Dr. Alexander Baldonado, a Filipino-Canadian and U.S. permanent resident, has been found guilty of 10 counts of health care fraud amounting to $20.7 million.
A jury reached the verdict in just over an hour, convicting Baldonado based on charges filed by a grand jury last year.
Court records show he accepted cash kickbacks in exchange for approving lab test orders billed to Medicare. He also authorized unnecessary and costly cancer genetic tests alongside COVID-19 screenings during testing events, even when patients did not request or receive the results.
Additionally, Baldonado allegedly billed Medicare for office visits he never conducted.
