Masbate Experiences 5.1 Quake, PHIVOLCS Warns of Aftershocks
A 5.1-magnitude aftershock struck Cataingan, Masbate, early Wednesday morning, as reported by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

Magnitude 5.2 Earthquake Strikes Near Cataingan, Masbate
A magnitude 5.2 earthquake was recorded early in the morning, with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) confirming that the tremor was tectonic in origin. The quake occurred at a depth of two kilometers, making it relatively shallow and more likely to be felt on the surface. The seismic activity was recorded at precisely 5:50 a.m., with its epicenter pinpointed at 11.84°N, 124.08°E, approximately 21 kilometers south-southeast of Cataingan, a coastal municipality in Masbate province.
Although the initial tremor was significant, PHIVOLCS reported that no major damage was expected as a result of the quake. Additionally, while aftershocks are typically possible following earthquakes of this magnitude, seismologists indicated that no further significant aftershocks were anticipated at this time.
A Second Earthquake Recorded in Masbate on the Same Day
In a separate seismic event, another earthquake was detected in Masbate province just a few hours later. According to PHIVOLCS, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck at 8:28 a.m. on Saturday, February 15. This second quake had its epicenter located 29 kilometers southwest of Claveria town, another area within Masbate province.
While both earthquakes were moderate in strength, their shallow depths made them noticeable to residents in nearby towns and cities. Authorities are continuously monitoring for any potential seismic activity in the region, as Masbate is situated along the Philippine Fault Zone, an area known for its frequent earthquakes.
Preparedness and Safety Measures
Although no immediate damage was reported, earthquakes of this magnitude serve as critical reminders for residents and local authorities to stay prepared for future seismic activity. PHIVOLCS continues to advise the public to follow earthquake safety protocols, including:
- Staying indoors during an earthquake and taking cover under sturdy furniture.
- Evacuating to open spaces away from buildings, trees, and power lines if outdoors.
- Checking for structural damage in homes and workplaces after strong tremors.
- Being prepared with emergency supplies, such as food, water, flashlights, and first aid kits.
Masbate has experienced significant seismic activity in the past, and experts emphasize the importance of community readiness and disaster response planning. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and stay updated through official channels, including PHIVOLCS and local government advisories.
