PBBM rejects the content of 'sex education' proposal
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. strongly criticized the proposed policies for sex education in the Philippines, particularly Senate Bill 1979, calling them "absurd" and "ridiculous." In a media interview, he expressed concerns about certain provisions in the bill that promote "woke" ideologies, which he believes are inappropriate for young children. Marcos stated that these provisions, such as the idea that every child should have the right to explore different sexualities, are unacceptable and distort the purpose of sex education. While he supports sex education focused on topics like reproductive anatomy, the consequences of early pregnancy, and HIV risks, Marcos emphasized that the "woke" elements in the bill are troubling. He vowed to reject the bill if it reaches his desk in its current form, stating that he would veto it as a parent and grandparent who feels strongly about the issue.
Manila, Philippines – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. voiced strong opposition to certain aspects of Senate Bill 1979, a proposed law on sex education, labeling them as "absurd" and inappropriate for young students.
Speaking at the launch of the Tesla Center Philippines in Taguig on Monday, the President said he was "shocked" by the bill’s content, particularly provisions that he believes introduce “woke ideology” into the educational system.
"Over the weekend, I finally read Senate Bill 1979 in detail, and I was shocked," Marcos said. "This idea that every child has the right to explore different sexualities is ridiculous. It’s abhorrent. It distorts what sex education should be for children."
Concerns Over ‘Woke’ Elements
The President expressed concerns that the bill promotes ideologies that he deems inappropriate for young students, rather than focusing on essential topics such as reproductive health, the dangers of early pregnancy, and the risks of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
"We need to teach all of that so the youth are informed," Marcos explained. "However, the 'woke' absurdities they’ve included are deeply troubling to me."
While he did not specify which parts of the bill he found problematic, his remarks suggest concerns over language related to gender identity and sexual orientation.
Presidential Veto on the Horizon?
President Marcos made it clear that the bill, in its current form, would not receive his approval should it reach his desk.
"If this bill passes as it is, I guarantee all parents, teachers, and children: I will immediately veto it," he declared. "As a parent and grandparent, I feel very strongly about this."
His statement signals a potential clash with lawmakers advocating for more inclusive and comprehensive sex education in the country.
Debate Over Comprehensive Sex Education
Senate Bill 1979 seeks to expand and modernize sex education in Philippine schools, aiming to address issues such as teenage pregnancies, HIV infections, and sexual violence prevention. Proponents argue that a more inclusive and science-based curriculum will better equip young Filipinos to make informed decisions about their health and relationships.
However, critics—including President Marcos—argue that certain provisions conflict with traditional values and could expose children to topics that they believe are inappropriate for their age.
Public and Political Reactions
The President’s strong remarks have drawn mixed reactions. Conservative and religious groups praised his stance, arguing that sex education should be limited to biological and reproductive topics. Meanwhile, progressive organizations and education advocates criticized his opposition, saying it undermines efforts to create a more informed and inclusive society.
As the debate over Senate Bill 1979 continues, lawmakers will have to decide whether to revise the bill’s contents to secure the President’s approval or push forward despite the threat of a veto.
With sex education being a highly sensitive and polarizing issue in the country, the future of the bill remains uncertain.
