PH, New Zealand Forge Closer Military Alliance Amid WPS Dispute

As tensions continue to escalate in the West Philippine Sea, more nations are looking to strengthen their military and defense partnerships with the Philippines. New Zealand is the latest country to express such intentions, having recently completed the first round of discussions on establishing a Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the Philippines.

According to New Zealand Ambassador Catherine McIntosh, “There is strong political commitment to concluding a Status of Visiting Forces Agreement and officials meet recently for productive and constructive discussions.”

The anticipated Status of Visiting Forces Agreement (SOVFA) is expected to bolster military cooperation and maritime security efforts between the Philippines and New Zealand, aligning with similar agreements the Philippines has with allies such as the United States, Japan, Australia, France, and Canada.

While the SOVFA is not directed at any specific threat, New Zealand has openly expressed concerns about the actions of the Chinese Coast Guard in the West Philippine Sea. Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro emphasized the advantages of having more allied nations supporting the Philippines.

“Both countries and multilateral countries initiative to resist China’s unilateral narrative to change international law, so the VFA with New Zealand will be very important for us for that purpose,” said Teodoro during an event hosted by the New Zealand Embassy that commemorated Waitangi Day.
