Philippine military chief says country 'inevitably' affected if Taiwan is invaded
The Philippines' military chief warns that the country will be "inevitably involved" if Taiwan is invaded, citing security risks, economic fallout, and the need to protect thousands of Filipino workers. The statement highlights the Philippines’ strategic position, its defense ties with the U.S., and the potential consequences of escalating regional tensions.

Manila, Philippines – The Philippines' top military official has stated that the country will be "inevitably involved" if China proceeds with an invasion of Taiwan, emphasizing the potential impact on regional security and economic stability.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr. highlighted the geographical and strategic implications of a conflict in Taiwan, which is located just over 100 miles from the northernmost Philippine islands. Brawner warned that any military aggression in the region would not only disrupt the security landscape but also directly affect the lives of Filipinos, particularly those working in Taiwan.
Philippines’ Strategic Position
The Philippines’ proximity to Taiwan makes it a critical player in any potential conflict in the region. Brawner noted that an invasion could trigger a humanitarian crisis, with thousands of Filipino workers needing evacuation. Currently, more than 150,000 Filipinos are employed in Taiwan, mostly in factories and as domestic helpers.
The military chief also pointed out the possible security risks in the northern provinces of the Philippines, including Batanes, which is closest to Taiwan. He said the AFP has been monitoring the situation closely and preparing contingency plans to safeguard national interests.
US-Philippines Defense Ties
The Philippines has a mutual defense treaty with the United States, which could further complicate its position in the event of a Taiwan conflict. Under the 1951 agreement, both nations have committed to supporting each other in case of an armed attack. The US has also increased its military presence in the Philippines, gaining access to key military bases under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA).
China has repeatedly criticized the US-Philippines alliance, warning Manila against becoming involved in the Taiwan issue. Beijing considers Taiwan a breakaway province and has vowed to reunify it with the mainland, by force if necessary. However, the US and its allies, including Japan and Australia, have stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
Potential Economic Fallout
Beyond security concerns, an invasion of Taiwan could also have severe economic consequences for the Philippines. The country relies heavily on trade and supply chains connected to Taiwan, particularly in the electronics industry. Any disruption could lead to higher prices and shortages of essential goods.
Additionally, tourism and investment could be affected, as increased tensions in the region might discourage foreign investors and travelers. Brawner urged diplomatic efforts to prevent any escalation, stressing that the Philippines prefers a peaceful resolution through dialogue and cooperation.
While the Philippines has not taken an official stance on Taiwan’s sovereignty, its military leadership acknowledges the inevitable consequences of any conflict in the region. With growing geopolitical tensions, the AFP continues to strengthen its defenses while closely coordinating with allies to ensure national security.
As the situation develops, the Philippine government is expected to take a cautious approach, balancing its relationships with China, the US, and other regional partners to safeguard its interests.
