Philippines open to ICC arrest warrants for drug war probe.
The Philippines is prepared to comply if the International Criminal Court (ICC) requests Interpol to issue arrest warrants related to the investigation of former President Rodrigo Duterte's controversial "war on drugs," which began in 2016 and resulted in thousands of deaths. Top official Lucas P. Bersamin stated that the country would respond positively to such requests. The ICC opened an investigation into possible crimes against humanity, despite Duterte's and police claims that the killings were justified and occurred in self-defense. Duterte previously withdrew the Philippines from the ICC in 2019 as the inquiry began but has recently called for a swift conclusion to the investigation. Activists contend that the actual death toll from the crackdown is much higher than the police's reported figure of 6,200.
