MANILA – Senator Grace Poe emphasized the credibility and importance of print media in countering the spread of fake news, describing it as a pillar of accountability and responsibility in today’s digital age.

In a press statement, Poe highlighted that while social media prioritizes speed and virality, traditional print journalism maintains ethical standards and fact-checking practices, making it a trusted source of information.

Print vs. Digital Media

Poe noted that print and broadcast outlets are more resilient to misinformation accusations compared to digital news platforms and social media. However, she acknowledged the growing influence of Facebook, TikTok, and other digital platforms, which can shape public opinion, influence consumer behavior, and even affect election outcomes.

“What happens online impacts the real world. Freedom of information and access to accurate data are crucial for a democratic nation like ours,” she stated.

While social media acts as a distribution channel, Poe stressed that content creators—whether journalists, bloggers, or ordinary citizens—must ensure accuracy and responsibility in the content they share.

Print and Digital: A Balanced Approach

Citing a 2023 global study by research firm Toluna, Poe pointed out that 71% of respondents believed that reading printed material provides a deeper understanding of stories.

She suggested that rather than competing, print and digital media should complement each other. Print media’s depth and trustworthiness can be combined with the speed and accessibility of digital platforms to create a balanced and effective information ecosystem.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has also instructed the Presidential Communications Office to help combat fake news and ensure public access to credible information.
