Sky’s the Limit: China’s Flying Taxis Could Take Off by 2028 in Sci-Fi-Like Leap

In the next three to five years, flying taxis could become a common form of transportation in China, according to Ehang, a company specializing in autonomous aerial vehicles (AAVs). This prediction comes after Ehang, along with its partner Hefei Heyi Aviation, received certification from the Civil Aviation Administration of China to operate pilotless aerial vehicles.

Initially, these vehicles will be used for tourism in cities like Guangzhou and Hefei, with plans to expand into air taxi services in cities such as Hefei and Shenzhen. The flying taxis, like the EH216-S, are fully electric, two-seater vehicles with 16 propellers, capable of speeds up to 130 km/h and a range of 30 km.

Ehang aims to expand operations to additional cities in the coming years. As for pricing, the company expects the rides to be affordable, with initial trips lasting from three to ten minutes.

China is rapidly advancing its "low-altitude economy," including drones and air taxis, which are expected to become a trillion-dollar industry by 2035. While China leads in this sector, international companies such as Boeing, Airbus, and startups in the U.S. are also competing in the growing flying car market, which could be worth $30 billion by 2035.
