The FDA has elevated its recall of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips to the highest risk level.
Frito-Lay initially recalled 6,344 bags (13-ounce) of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips on December 16, as stated in an FDA alert. These chips were sold in Oregon and Washington through various stores and online platforms, with sales beginning on November 3, 2024.
The recall applies exclusively to Lay’s Classic Potato Chips distributed in these two states. No other flavors, sizes, products, or variety packs are affected.
On January 27, the FDA classified the recall as Class I, indicating that consuming or being exposed to the product could result in “serious adverse health consequences or death.”
Reason for the Lay’s Potato Chips Recall
Frito-Lay initiated the recall after a consumer reported that the chips may contain undeclared milk.
According to the FDA’s December 16 statement, individuals with milk allergies or severe sensitivities face the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume the affected product.
The recall was categorized as Class I, the highest risk level, because milk is one of the FDA’s eight major food allergens. Exposure can cause symptoms such as hives, rash, stomach cramps, dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, swollen vocal cords, breathing difficulties, and even unconsciousness in allergic individuals.
Frito-Lay has confirmed that, as of now, no allergic reactions related to this recall have been reported.
