Waymo Initiates Data Collection in Tokyo with Driver-Operated Test Vehicles
Waymo is launching its first international on-road operations in Tokyo, deploying 25 driver-operated electric vehicles to gather data on the city's traffic infrastructure and driving behaviors, in collaboration with local partners Nihon Kotsu and Go.

Waymo, Alphabet's autonomous driving technology subsidiary, is set to commence data collection operations in Tokyo next week, marking its inaugural on-road activity outside the United States. The initiative involves deploying 25 driver-operated electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles to map key areas of Tokyo and analyze local traffic infrastructure and driving behaviors.
-
Objective: The primary goal is to understand Tokyo's unique driving environment, including its left-hand traffic flow and dense urban landscape.
-
Collaborations: Waymo is partnering with Nihon Kotsu, a prominent Japanese taxi service provider, and Go, a ride-hailing app partly owned by Nihon Kotsu, to facilitate vehicle testing and operations.
-
Testing Areas: The initial phase will cover seven central Tokyo wards: Minato, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Chiyoda, Chūō, Shinagawa, and Kōtō.
-
Future Plans: Following the data collection phase, Waymo aims to progress to autonomous driving tests with a safety driver present, though specific timelines have not been disclosed.
