LOILO CITY, Philippines – Boracay Island is gearing up for a surge in cruise tourism, with 17 cruise ships set to arrive in 2025—almost double the nine recorded last year.
Malay town Mayor Frolibar Bautista highlighted that Boracay remains a top global destination, drawing visitors with its pristine beaches and lively attractions.
To accommodate the expected influx, the local government, in partnership with Aklan’s provincial administration, is enhancing the island’s infrastructure. Key improvements include upgrading port facilities, optimizing tourist services, and relocating the cruise ship anchor point to less than a kilometer from the jetty port for easier passenger access.
Enhancing Visitor Experience and Safety
“We want to deliver a world-class experience. Even though cruise visitors stay briefly, our goal is to inspire them to return with family and friends,” Bautista stated.
Prioritizing passenger safety, local authorities recently conducted the Boracay Cruise Ship Safety and Emergency Response Seminar. Attendees included members of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, emergency responders, and other stakeholders. The seminar covered essential topics such as water security, emergency protocols, first aid, and CPR training.
“Our top priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of all visitors, particularly cruise ship passengers,” Bautista added.
Economic and Cultural Impact
The increase in cruise arrivals is expected to boost the local economy, benefiting businesses and communities. To enrich the visitor experience, cultural events will be held, highlighting Boracay’s rich heritage and breathtaking natural beauty.
Tourism officials remain optimistic, seeing the cruise tourism surge as a vital factor in sustaining Boracay’s reputation as a premier tropical destination.
In 2022, the Department of Tourism (DOT) introduced three new “tourism circuits” beyond traditional beach and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) promotions. One notable addition is the Boracay Biking Tour, designed for sightseeing and endurance cycling, catering to families and adventure seekers.
With these developments, Boracay is set to solidify its position as a must-visit destination for cruise travelers worldwide.
