Check Your Fridge: More Than 4 Million Eggs Are Part of a Class 1 Recall by the FDA

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has upgraded an ongoing egg recall to Class 1, its most severe level, indicating that the product poses a risk of "serious adverse health consequences or death."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) initially announced the recall on September 6 for eggs from Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC in Bonduel, Wisconsin. The agency warned that the eggs "may be contaminated with Salmonella, a bacteria that can cause severe and potentially fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems." These eggs were distributed through retail stores and food service providers in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan.

On September 30, the recall was escalated to Class 1. According to the Associated Press, the recall now affects more than 345,417 dozen egg cartons—approximately four million eggs. The CDC stated that the recall includes "all types of chicken eggs, including cage-free and organic," as well as "all carton sizes and cases" labeled with "Milo’s Poultry Farms" or "Tony’s Fresh Market," regardless of expiration date. Additionally, eggs from "M & E Family Farms" and duck eggs from "Happy Quackers Farm," both supplied by Milo’s, are also included in the recall.

As for consumer guidance, the CDC recommends discarding any recalled eggs. It also advises thoroughly cleaning any surfaces or items that may have come into contact with the eggs using hot, soapy water or a dishwasher. If anyone in the household develops severe Salmonella symptoms—including a fever above 102°F, prolonged diarrhea lasting more than three days, blood in the stool, or excessive vomiting that prevents fluid intake—they should seek medical attention immediately.
