The Department of Health (DOH) has issued a nationwide call for heightened awareness and early detection of dengue fever symptoms as cases continue to rise across the Philippines. Early identification and prompt medical intervention are crucial in preventing severe complications and fatalities associated with this mosquito-borne disease.

Current Dengue Situation

As of August 10, 2024, the DOH reported a total of 150,354 dengue cases nationwide, marking a 39% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. Despite the surge in cases, the number of deaths has remained relatively low, which health officials attribute to improved awareness and early treatment.

Certain regions have experienced significant upticks in dengue cases. For instance, Western Visayas recorded 10,188 cases from January to August 3, 2024, with an alarming addition of 1,743 new cases in just one week. Additionally, nine local government units in Calabarzon, Central Luzon, and the National Capital Region have reported sharp increases in dengue cases, prompting the DOH to extend targeted assistance.

Importance of Early Detection

The DOH emphasizes that early detection of dengue is vital for effective treatment and reducing mortality rates. Common early symptoms include:

  • Sudden high fever

  • Severe headaches

  • Pain behind the eyes

  • Muscle and joint pains

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Skin rashes

  • Mild bleeding (e.g., nosebleeds, gum bleeding, or easy bruising)

Health officials advise individuals experiencing these symptoms to seek immediate medical attention to facilitate timely diagnosis and management.

DOH's 5S Strategy

To combat the spread of dengue, the DOH continues to promote the "5S" strategy:

  1. Search and Destroy: Eliminate mosquito breeding sites by regularly emptying and cleaning water containers, disposing of unused tires, and covering water storage units.

  2. Self-Protection Measures: Use insect repellents, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, and install screens on windows and doors to prevent mosquito bites.

  3. Seek Early Consultation: Immediately consult a healthcare provider if dengue symptoms are suspected to ensure prompt diagnosis and treatment.

  4. Support Fogging/Spraying: Participate in community-wide fogging or spraying activities during outbreaks to kill adult mosquitoes and reduce transmission.

  5. Sustain Hydration: Maintain adequate fluid intake to prevent dehydration, especially for individuals exhibiting dengue symptoms.

Implementing these preventive measures is essential in reducing dengue incidence and safeguarding public health.

Community and Government Initiatives

Local government units (LGUs) are collaborating with the DOH to intensify anti-dengue campaigns. For example, Baguio City has entered into a memorandum of agreement with the DOH-Cordillera Administrative Region to allocate funds for the city's anti-dengue program. Additionally, Senator Bong Go has called for heightened vigilance and cooperation among community members to address the rising number of dengue cases in various areas.

The increasing number of dengue cases in the Philippines underscores the critical need for early detection, prompt medical consultation, and proactive community engagement. By adhering to the DOH's guidelines and participating in preventive measures, the public can significantly contribute to controlling the spread of dengue and reducing its impact on communities nationwide.
