Gig-Tripping: The Hottest Travel Trend You’ll Want to Try in 2024

Travel trends like “hush trips,” “travel dupes,” and “slow travel” have been making waves, and now gig-tripping is the latest concept gaining traction. As summer 2024 approaches, gig-tripping—combining music and travel—has music fans planning vacations around their favorite artists' tour stops.
What is Gig-Tripping?
Gig-tripping refers to planning trips, often internationally, around concerts or music events. While it shares similarities with past trends like Deadhead tours, gig-trippers focus on attending one or two shows as part of a broader vacation or workcation.

“Sometimes, it’s cheaper to travel to another city to see a concert,” says Phil Dengler of The Vacationer. For instance, Taylor Swift fans traveling to Lyon, France, or Gelsenkirchen, Germany, for her 2024 Eras Tour may save on ticket prices while exploring new destinations.

A 2023 survey by GetYourGuide found that 45% of Americans choose travel destinations based on events, while 60% are willing to travel abroad for cheaper concert tickets.

Benefits of Gig-Tripping
Gig-tripping offers music lovers a chance to see their favorite artists while immersing themselves in new cities. From iconic venues like Germany's Schalke 04 stadium to local meetups and cultural activities, gig-trippers enjoy a full travel experience.

“Many fans turn these trips into full vacations,” says Madison Pietrowski of GetYourGuide. Alongside concerts, travelers explore historic sites, try local cuisine, and participate in guided tours. Additionally, gig-tripping fosters connections with like-minded fans, enhancing the experience.

Downsides of Gig-Tripping
However, gig-tripping isn’t without challenges. Increased demand around concerts can drive up hotel prices, flights, and transportation costs, particularly in cities less prepared for large crowds.

“Before gig-tripping, calculate all costs, including tickets, flights, and lodging, to ensure it makes financial sense,” warns Dengler. For those who dislike crowds, consider visiting attractions during off-hours or exploring lesser-known areas.
