Hidden Gems of Hong Kong: Discovering the Untouched Charms of Sha Tau Kok!

HONG KONG — Sha Tau Kok, once the last undiscovered enclave in Hong Kong, is slowly revealing its secrets to the world.

Designated as part of the Frontier Closed Area in 1951, access to Sha Tau Kok was limited to those with a closed-area permit. However, the area is now gradually opening up to non-residents. The first phase of this transition began in June 2023, followed by the second phase this January.

Nestled in Hong Kong’s North District, adjacent to Shenzhen’s Yantian District, Sha Tau Kok is becoming a top choice for weekend getaways. With its Instagram-worthy attractions, postcard-perfect landscapes, delicious local delicacies, and rich cultural landmarks, it promises an unforgettable experience.

Starting December 2023, both Hong Kong residents and overseas visitors can apply for a Tourism Closed Area Permit through the Hong Kong Police Force's online platform. Applications must be submitted at least three working days before the planned visit and are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Visitors can explore Sha Tau Kok via kaito ferry, with options to venture to nearby islands like Lai Chi Wo, Kat O, Ap Chau, and the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark.

The name Sha Tau Kok is steeped in legend, said to be inspired by a poem from a Qing dynasty minister: "The sun rises from the beach (Sha Tau), / the moon hangs above the cape (Kok)."

Last year, the Hong Kong Tourism Board hosted media representatives from Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines for an exclusive tour of this enigmatic border town, further shining a light on its hidden treasures.
