GitHub has introduced Agent Mode for GitHub Copilot, enhancing its AI-powered coding assistant. This new feature allows Copilot to refine its own code, detect and fix errors, and assist developers more effectively.
According to GitHub, Agent Mode is designed to support, not replace, developers—acting as a reliable assistant rather than taking over their work. The company highlighted Copilot’s ability to provide pull request feedback, auto-fix security vulnerabilities, and help with implementation brainstorming.
GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke announced the update on X, stating that Agent Mode elevates Copilot from a coding partner to an AI-powered peer. Available in VS Code Insiders, it enables Copilot to iterate on code, suggest terminal commands, and resolve runtime errors beyond an initial request.
Alongside this upgrade, Copilot Edits in VS Code is now generally available, allowing multi-file editing through natural language prompts. GitHub has also expanded its model selection, adding Gemini 2.0 Flash alongside OpenAI’s GPT-4o, o1, o3-mini, and Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet.
GitHub also teased an upcoming autonomous AI agent, codenamed Project Padawan. Expected to launch later this year, the agent will allow developers to assign issues to Copilot, which will generate fully-tested pull requests.
