A report from VPNMentor has revealed that a massive data breach has occurred, compromising over 1.2 million records belonging to multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Philippine National Police (PNP), National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), and Special Action Force (SAF).
This breach has exposed sensitive information, such as fingerprint scans, tax identification numbers, birth certificates, academic transcripts, passport copies, and internal directives intended for law enforcement officers. Jeremiah Fowler, the cybersecurity researcher who authored the report, noted that the data was stored in an unsecured, non-password-protected database that was vulnerable to cyberattacks and ransomware.
He also stated that the personal information of law enforcement officers could be used for malicious activities, such as identity theft or blackmail. While the database was exposed for at least six weeks, it is unclear if applicant data was also leaked. The Anti-Cybercrime Group is currently investigating the extent and impact of the breach.
