Experts Warn That AI Won't Cause Human Extinction, But It Could Harm Unprepared Countries
At the Almaty Digital Forum, the introduction of China's AI chatbot DeepSeek sparked discussions on AI's role in global economies. Its low cost showed that small teams can create affordable AI solutions, making them accessible to more countries. Kazakhstan is aiming to lead in AI development, planning to train a million people by 2030 and invest in initiatives like Alem.ai to drive innovation and economic growth.

An earthquake shook the tech world just as experts, officials, and businesspeople were finalizing preparations for Kazakhstan's seventh annual Almaty Digital Forum. The surprise introduction of the Chinese AI chatbot DeepSeek stirred the tech community and raised concerns about the future of AI.
At the forum, attention shifted to DeepSeek’s low cost—just $6 million—compared to other AI tools that cost between $40-100 million. This made it clear that small teams using open-source technology can create affordable AI solutions for a wide range of users.
Experts agreed that AI will drive economic development, and the key to success is using it to enhance people’s abilities. AI will become more accessible, not just in the hands of big tech companies but also smaller developers and local businesses.
However, some experts warned that not preparing for AI could have serious consequences. AI could help preserve cultures if developed to support local languages and values, but without it, cultures may be rapidly absorbed.
Kazakhstan, along with neighboring Central Asian countries, is focused on not falling behind in AI development. Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov emphasized the importance of international collaboration in AI, and the country is planning major AI initiatives.
By 2030, Kazakhstan plans to train a million people in AI, including students and civil servants. The government is investing in Alem.ai, a center dedicated to AI research, start-ups, and education, aiming to make the country an AI leader in Central Asia. The initiative hopes to boost AI-driven exports and foster economic growth, with plans to attract global tech companies and professionals.
Kazakhstan's ambition was evident at the forum, with over 220 tech companies and 80 local start-ups showcasing their work. The event showed the country’s commitment to becoming a major player in the global AI scene.
