John "Paddy" Hemingway, the last surviving pilot from the Battle of Britain, has passed away at the age of 105. Originally from Dublin, Hemingway joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) as a teenager before the outbreak of World War II. By the time he was 21, he was engaged in aerial combat during the historic Battle of Britain, a critical three-month conflict where RAF pilots defended the skies from relentless German Luftwaffe attacks.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer honored Hemingway's bravery, stating that his courage, along with that of his fellow RAF pilots, played a crucial role in ending World War II and securing freedom. The pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain were famously called "The Few," a title given by then-Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who declared, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."

The RAF confirmed that Hemingway "passed away peacefully" on Monday. His death marks the end of an era and serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who defended Britain during the war.

A Lifetime of Bravery

During the war, Hemingway's squadron achieved remarkable success, shooting down 90 enemy aircraft in just 11 days during May 1940. They also provided critical air support during the Battle of France. Hemingway himself was shot down four times throughout the war but always survived.

In August 1940, during intense dogfights, he was twice forced to eject from his Hurricane fighter, once landing in the sea off the Essex coast and another time in marshland. The wreckage of his aircraft was recovered in 2019, with the control column still set to "fire," a testament to his determination in combat.

His bravery earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross in July 1941, an honor awarded for exceptional courage during aerial operations. However, even on his way to receive the medal from King George VI, Hemingway had to escape from a Blenheim aircraft that crashed during takeoff.

Serving with the 85 Squadron in RAF Hunsdon, he had another close call when his night fighter suffered an instrument failure at low altitude. As he bailed out, his parachute failed to fully deploy, but tree branches miraculously broke his fall.

Later, while fighting near Ravenna, Italy, his Spitfire was hit multiple times, forcing him to eject once again. Stranded in enemy territory, he was assisted by Italian civilians, who helped him return to Allied forces.

A Humble Hero

Despite his incredible survival stories, Hemingway remained humble about his role in history. In a 2023 interview, he remarked, "We never assumed greatness—we were simply fighting a war we were trained to fight." His deepest regret was the loss of his close friend, Richard "Dickie" Lee, in August 1940.

RAF officials remembered Hemingway as a composed, thoughtful, and spirited individual who always had a twinkle in his eye when recalling his adventures. His passing truly marks the end of an era, ensuring his legacy as one of the bravest defenders of Britain.
