OpenAI Signals Interest in Acquiring Chrome Amid Google's Antitrust Proceedings

OpenAI has expressed interest in acquiring Google's Chrome browser if a federal court mandates its divestiture as part of antitrust remedies. This development emerged during the remedies phase of the U.S. Department of Justice's antitrust trial against Google, where Judge Amit Mehta previously ruled that Google holds a monopoly in online search.

  • OpenAI's Interest in Chrome: Nick Turley, OpenAI's Head of Product for ChatGPT, testified that the company would consider purchasing Chrome to enhance the distribution of its AI tools. Turley emphasized that integrating ChatGPT with a widely-used browser like Chrome could significantly improve user experience and accessibility.

  • Previous Partnership Attempts: OpenAI had previously approached Google to integrate its search technology into ChatGPT. However, Google declined the proposal, citing competitive concerns. Currently, ChatGPT relies on Microsoft's Bing for search capabilities, though Turley noted quality issues with this provider.

  • Development of Proprietary Search Index: OpenAI is working on its own search index, aiming for ChatGPT to handle 80% of queries using this index by the end of 2025. However, progress has been slower than anticipated, making access to established platforms like Chrome more appealing.
