Philippine Air Force Resumes FA-50 Jet Operations as Crash Investigation Nears Completion

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Air Force (PAF) has lifted the suspension of its FA-50 fighter jets, allowing the remaining 11 aircraft to resume operations less than a month after a tragic crash in Bukidnon that claimed the lives of two pilots.

According to PAF spokesperson Col. Ma. Consuelo Castillo, the fleet has been on “full operational status” since March 25. The grounding was initially implemented as authorities investigated the fatal March 4 accident, which resulted in the deaths of Major Jude Salang-Oy and First Lieutenant April John Dadulla when their jet went down near Mt. Kalatungan.

Investigation in Final Stages

The March 4 incident marked the first recorded crash since the Philippine government procured 12 FA-50 fighter jets from Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI). Castillo stated that the official report on the accident is in its “finalization stage,” bringing the probe closer to a conclusion.

Blessing Ceremony for Pilots and Aircraft

On Monday, the PAF held a blessing ceremony for the fallen pilots and the remaining FA-50 jets. The 5th Fighter Wing, Air Defense Command, emphasized that the tradition goes beyond formality—it is a moment of prayer, dedication, and gratitude for the safety of pilots and personnel.

“With every mission we undertake, we seek divine guidance for safe flights and ground operations, ensuring that we uphold the highest standards of excellence, safety, and service,” the 5th Fighter Wing said in a Facebook post.

The unit reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Philippine airspace, stating, “The 5th Fighter Wing stands strong, ready to soar, and dedicated to its mission—guarding the skies with unwavering faith, discipline, and courage.”

Jets to Resume Critical Missions

With the grounding lifted, the FA-50 fleet is set to resume essential missions, including maritime patrols, airspace security, and support for ongoing military operations.

“The return of the FA-50s will allow them to fulfill their crucial role in defending our airspace and supporting national security efforts,” Castillo added.

As the final investigation report nears completion, the PAF remains focused on ensuring the highest safety standards for its pilots and aircraft.
