Transportation official disputes report of fare increase in light of PUV modernization
On Saturday, a transportation official warned the public about false reports that were making the rounds on social media, claiming that once the Public Utility Vehicles Modernization Program (PUVMP) is fully enforced, there will be a fare increase.
In Central Visayas, Eduardo Montealto Jr., the Director of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), declared that the news site's article was inaccurate and misleading.
The minimum fare will not be raised from PHP15 to PHP40, he said, by the PVUMP. In order to protect the public, the LTFRB sets and regulates fare rates, so this claim is without factual or legal support. Montealto told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) that it will not be altered based on conjecture.
According to him, every request for a fare rate increase will be subject to notices and hearings as well as a drawn-out formal evaluation process.
The National Economic Development Authority and the Department of Energy, among other government agencies, will provide pertinent data for a thorough evaluation and appreciation as part of the process, he added.
The deadline of April 30 for individual jeepneys to combine into corporations and cooperatives was not extended by the national government.
Nonetheless, applications for consolidations are still accepted by the LTFRB even after the deadline of April 30 for the submission of supporting documentation. Partial applications submitted within the deadline are still accepted. Thus far, LTFRB-7 has a combined 8,500 units in Central Visayas.
