Pope Francis appoints Filipino Archbishop Bernardito Auza as the Vatican’s envoy to the EU. A veteran diplomat, he previously served as nuncio to Spain, Andorra, and Haiti, and as the Holy See’s UN observer.

Pope Francis has appointed Filipino Archbishop Bernardito Auza as the Vatican’s new apostolic nuncio to the European Union (EU). The announcement was made on March 23, 2025 (Manila time) by the Vatican Press Office.
Auza, a Boholano bishop and veteran Vatican diplomat, previously served as the Holy See’s apostolic nuncio to Spain and Andorra since 2019. He was also the permanent observer of the Holy See to the United Nations from 2014 and previously served as the Vatican’s ambassador to Haiti in 2008 under Pope Benedict XVI, who granted him the honorary title of Archbishop of Suacia.
As an apostolic nuncio, Auza will serve as the Vatican's official ambassador to the European Union, handling diplomatic relations and representing the Holy See’s interests.
