'Squid Game' Actor Lee Joo Sil Passes Away at 80

Lee Joo Sil, the Korean actress known for portraying Park Mal Soon in Squid Game Season 2 on Netflix, has passed away at the age of 80.

According to her talent agency, 1230Culture, Lee passed away on Sunday at St. Mary’s Hospital in Uijeongbu, South Korea, due to complications from stomach cancer, which she was recently diagnosed with.

Born on March 8, 1944, in Bucheon, South Korea, Lee had a long and distinguished career in film and television. She appeared in notable productions such as Train to Busan and the hit K-drama The Uncanny Counter, which aired for two seasons starting in 2020.

Lee began her acting journey in Korean theater in 1965, performing in stage adaptations of Death of a Salesman and Macbeth. She also had significant roles in several TV dramas, including Someday (2006), where she appeared in 16 episodes, and Loving You a Thousand Times, in which she played Choi Sim-deok over 55 episodes. In 2013, she took on the role of a North Korean spy in the thriller Commitment.

Her passing marks the end of an era for Korean entertainment, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances across film, television, and theater.
