Hextech Chests Removed? League of Legends Devs Explain Now

Riot Games has released a video for League of Legends players, explaining their decision to remove Hextech chests, stating that it was not a long-term sustainable feature. After the controversial removal of the popular Hextech chests, Riot Games provided the rationale behind this decision and shared their plans for the future of League of Legends.

League of Legends has been around since 2009 and has gone through considerable changes during its more than 15 years of existence. What began as a well-liked imitation of Dota quickly became one of the top MOBA games in the market. Even though League of Legends is a free game, players can spend real money to purchase character skins and champions. In addition to spending money, players could also get skins through Hextech chests, a type of loot box that players obtained simply by playing the game. However, Riot Games has recently decided to discontinue this feature.

In response to Riot Games' decision, numerous League of Legends enthusiasts advocated for a boycott, as Hextech chests were the primary means for many to obtain skins. Addressing the community's negative reaction, Riot released a video as part of their Developer Update, where two team members elaborated on the rationale behind this contentious choice. The developers recognized the significance of Hextech chests for specific players but clarified that this business model was not viable for the game in the long run.

The developers decided to remove this feature due to concerns about the long-term impact on the game.

The developers noted that players primarily obtained League of Legends skins through free chests, leading to a significant decline in skin purchases, which threatened one of the game's main revenue streams and resulted in "meaningful diminishing returns." While this change will directly affect players who primarily relied on Hextech chests to obtain skins, Riot has stated that this does not mean a complete reversion to the previous system before this feature was introduced.

Riot's rationale seems justified given the current video game landscape and the significant resources needed to develop games. However, eliminating such a widely-used feature is likely to provoke a strong negative reaction. It is uncertain how the League of Legends player base will respond to this latest announcement.
