March 19 – Ubisoft is relying on Assassin’s Creed Shadows to help recover from financial struggles as the company faces declining revenue, a falling stock price, and speculation about a potential takeover.

Set to launch on Thursday, the game marks a return to Ubisoft’s best-selling franchise after recent failures like Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Star Wars Outlaws raised concerns about its licensing strategy. The company’s stock dropped over 40% last year, attracting activist investor interest, while the Guillemot family, Ubisoft’s largest shareholder, has reportedly explored buyout discussions with Tencent and other investors.

Despite Ubisoft declining to comment on potential sales of its intellectual property, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is seen as a crucial test for the publisher. Industry analysts believe its success could significantly improve Ubisoft’s financial outlook.

The game, which takes players to feudal Japan, features two protagonists: Naoe, a stealthy female assassin, and Yasuke, an African samurai inspired by a real historical figure. While Ubisoft has refined its signature parkour and stealth mechanics, some early impressions note the story falls short. To match the billion-dollar success of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the game must appeal beyond its core fanbase.

The game’s release has faced criticism on social media, including from Elon Musk, over its diverse character lineup. Analysts suggest the current U.S. political climate, particularly under President Donald Trump, has made opposition to diversity efforts more prominent, potentially impacting reception in North America—Ubisoft’s largest market.

Despite the backlash, some believe the controversy may benefit Ubisoft by drawing more attention to the game. Previous titles featuring diverse protagonists, such as Sony’s Horizon series, have achieved great success, and some analysts see the debate as free publicity that could boost interest in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
