The United States has approved the potential sale of F-16 fighter jets, along with Sidewinder and Harpoon missiles, to the Philippines in three separate deals valued at over $2.5 billion.

Key Details:

  • F-16 Fighter Jets: The proposed sale includes 10 F-16C Block 70/72 aircraft and two F-16D Block 70/72 aircraft, manufactured by Lockheed Martin. This package is valued at approximately $2.43 billion and aims to enhance the Philippine Air Force's capabilities in territorial patrol and defense operations.

  • Missiles: The deals also encompass 12 AGM-84L-1 Harpoon Block II air-launched missiles and 24 AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II tactical missiles, with associated training and support equipment. The combined value of these missile packages is estimated at $162.4 million.

The Philippine government has expressed that these acquisitions are part of its military modernization efforts and are not intended to target any specific nation. National Security Council spokesperson Jonathan Malaya emphasized that the procurement aims to bolster the country's defense capabilities without harming the interests of other nations.

In parallel, the Philippines is exploring other options, including Saab's JAS 39 Gripen fighter aircraft from Sweden. A memorandum of understanding was signed in June 2023, indicating ongoing negotiations to diversify the country's defense assets.
