MANILA – The Philippine Army (PA) is evolving to address emerging security threats, shifting its focus from internal security to territorial defense, according to PA commander Lt. Gen. Roy Galido.
Speaking during the Army’s 128th founding anniversary at Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City, Galido emphasized the Army’s transformation into a more agile, capable, and future-ready force. While the PA has significantly weakened communist and terrorist groups over the years, it is now prioritizing territorial defense to safeguard the country’s land, coastline, and sovereignty.
This strategic shift aligns with the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept (CADC), ensuring better coordination with the Navy and Air Force to protect the Philippines' vast national territory. The PA will focus on land domain protection while supporting coastal and littoral operations.
Key initiatives include:
-
Reconfiguring forces for greater agility and effectiveness.
-
Creating a Combat Engineer Regiment to fortify key locations and mobility corridors.
-
Strengthening reserve forces through community defense centers and regional defense groups.
-
Upgrading reconnaissance capabilities for real-time battlefield awareness.
-
Restructuring infantry battalions to be lighter, more mobile, and strategically positioned.
Galido reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to national security, ensuring it remains prepared to defend the country’s interests amid evolving threats.
