Pope Arrives Home at Vatican After 5-Week Hospital Stay to Beat Life-Threatening Pneumonia
VATICAN CITY, Holy See – A weak and frail Pope Francis returned to the Vatican on Sunday after a five-week hospitalization due to a life-threatening bout of pneumonia. On his way home, the 88-year-old pontiff made a surprise stop at St. Mary Major Basilica, a place of personal significance, before beginning two months of prescribed rest and recovery.
Pope Francis’ Journey Back to the Vatican
The pope's motorcade entered Vatican City through the Perugino gate, with Francis seen in the front passenger seat wearing nasal tubes for supplemental oxygen. Before heading home, he requested a detour to St. Mary Major Basilica, where he always prays after foreign visits. Though he remained in his vehicle, he handed a bouquet of flowers to a cardinal to place before the revered Salus Populi Romani icon, a Byzantine-style painting of the Madonna cherished by Romans.
Emotional Farewell at Gemelli Hospital
Before leaving the hospital, Francis gave a thumbs-up and acknowledged the crowd gathered outside. Hundreds of well-wishers had assembled under the bright Sunday morning sun, eager to bid farewell to the pontiff.
“I see this woman with the yellow flowers. Brava!” said a visibly tired and bloated-looking Francis before offering a weak sign of the cross. Chants of “Viva il Papa!” and “Papa Francesco!” erupted from the crowd, which included patients who had been wheeled outside for the occasion.
Doctors Advise Continued Recovery
Medical professionals have advised the pope to refrain from large gatherings and strenuous activities for the time being. However, his physician, Dr. Luigi Carbone, expressed optimism that Francis would gradually regain strength and be able to resume his normal duties. Though the pneumonia infection has been treated, the pope will continue taking oral medication for a fungal lung infection and undergo respiratory and physical therapy.
“For three or four days he’s been asking when he can go home, so he’s very happy,” Carbone shared.
Pilgrims and Vatican Preparations
At the Vatican, crowds of pilgrims continued to visit St. Peter’s Basilica as part of the 2025 Holy Year celebrations. Large screens in St. Peter’s Square broadcasted the pope’s farewell at the hospital live, drawing an emotional response from the faithful.
No special modifications have been made to the Domus Santa Marta, where the pope resides in a two-room suite near St. Peter’s Basilica. However, he will have access to 24-hour medical care and supplemental oxygen if needed.
Looking Ahead
This hospitalization, the longest of Francis’ 12-year papacy, has sparked concern among Catholics worldwide. Despite health challenges, Vatican officials have dismissed speculation of a possible resignation, stating that the pope remains committed to his role.
As Pope Francis begins his recovery at home, the world watches with hope and prayers for his continued healing and strength.
