Rainy Weather to Persist Over Parts of the Philippines

The shear line and northeast monsoon will bring cloudy skies, scattered rains, and isolated thunderstorms across several parts of the Philippines, with potential flash floods and landslides. Strong winds and rough seas are expected in Northern and Eastern Luzon, while the rest of the country will experience moderate conditions.

Weather Systems Bringing Rain

PAGASA reported that the northeast monsoon (amihan) and a low-pressure area (LPA) are the primary causes of the wet weather. The amihan is bringing cold winds and light rains over Northern and Central Luzon, while the LPA, located east of the Visayas-Mindanao region, is enhancing rainfall activity in the southern parts of the country.

  • Luzon: Light to moderate rains are expected, particularly in Cagayan Valley, Cordillera, and Central Luzon due to the northeast monsoon.
  • Visayas: Cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are expected due to the effects of the LPA.
  • Mindanao: Moderate to heavy rains, especially in Caraga, Davao Region, and Northern Mindanao, where thunderstorms could lead to flash floods.

“While the LPA has not yet intensified into a tropical cyclone, we are monitoring its development. It could still bring heavy rainfall, especially in Visayas and Mindanao,” PAGASA said in its latest advisory.

Flooding and Landslide Risks

With the continuous rains, PAGASA has warned communities in flood-prone and mountainous areas to remain vigilant. Some regions are already experiencing saturated soil, increasing the risk of landslides and flash floods.

Local government units (LGUs) have been urged to implement precautionary measures, such as preparing evacuation sites, coordinating with disaster response teams, and keeping communication lines open in case of emergencies.

Impact on Daily Life and Travel

The rainy conditions may affect transportation, with possible flight delays due to poor visibility and sea travel disruptions caused by rough waters. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has advised fishermen and small vessels to avoid venturing into open seas, particularly in eastern seaboards where waves could reach hazardous levels.

Commuters in urban areas, including Metro Manila, should also anticipate traffic congestion due to waterlogged roads and reduced visibility. Authorities recommend allowing extra travel time and checking the latest weather updates before heading out.

When Will the Rains Stop?

PAGASA predicts that rainy weather will continue for the next few days, depending on the movement of the LPA. If the system dissipates, the rains may weaken by the weekend. However, if it develops into a tropical depression, it could bring stronger rains and winds, prompting further advisories from the weather bureau.

Safety Precautions

Authorities are urging the public to take necessary precautions, including:

  • Avoiding flood-prone areas and staying updated with weather bulletins.
  • Preparing emergency kits, including food, water, and first aid supplies.
  • Ensuring that drainage systems are clear to minimize urban flooding.
  • Refraining from crossing rivers and swollen streams during heavy rains.

PAGASA continues to monitor the situation and will release updates as necessary. Residents in affected areas are advised to stay informed and follow directives from local authorities.
