Drilon Presses Marcos to Call Urgent Special Session
Former Senate President Franklin Drilon urged President Marcos to call a special session of Congress so the Senate can convene as an impeachment court and decide on Vice President Sara Duterte’s case before the midterm elections. The Buhay ang People Power Network, a coalition of various organizations, also pressed for an immediate special session to establish the impeachment court as required by the Constitution. Drilon emphasized that the process must begin with a plenary session where the Senate formally refers the impeachment complaint. On Wednesday, the Senate adjourned without acknowledging that the complaint had already been transmitted. The impeachment case was endorsed by 215 members of the House of Representatives before being sent to the Senate.
Former Senate President Franklin Drilon emphasized the need for President Marcos to convene a special session of Congress, enabling the Senate to promptly assemble as an impeachment court to address the case against Vice President Sara Duterte. He stressed the importance of reaching a verdict before the midterm elections in May.
A broad coalition known as the Buhay ang People Power Network, composed of church leaders, civil society organizations, sectoral representatives, and NGOs, also called on the Senate to expedite the process by holding a special session to establish the impeachment court, as required by the Constitution.
Drilon explained in a phone interview with the Inquirer that the session is essential to initiate proceedings since the impeachment court can only function once the Senate formally refers the complaint during a plenary session.
Earlier in the week, the Senate adjourned without acknowledging that the impeachment complaint against Duterte had already been forwarded to the chamber, following the endorsement of 215 members of the House of Representatives.
