The federal government's "Muskification" is well underway.
China's DeepSeek AI model's emergence challenges US dominance, raising questions about the effectiveness of chip export restrictions and potentially accelerating China's AI advancements.

America's dominance in artificial intelligence, which looked certain only a week ago, is in danger because to the startling rise of DeepSeek.
The idea that training AI technology requires a lot of money and unrestricted access to state-of-the-art computer processors is being called into question by the fact that a little-known Chinese business has developed a model that can rival the best AI systems in the US. Google's Gemini and OpenAI's GPT-4o should be too strong for a Chinese AI startup to compete with President Donald Trump must now choose his course of action.
In order to stop Chinese companies from purchasing or producing the advanced computer chips needed to train AI models, the US has put tight restrictions in place. These chips are at the center of the arms race in artificial intelligence, and the export restrictions aim to stop China from keeping up.
Some have argued that the success of DeepSeek, which claims to have trained its new AI model R1 on far fewer high-end chips and at a fraction of the cost of leading AI models, indicates that the export restrictions imposed by the Biden and first Trump administrations have backfired. These strict restrictions may have backed Beijing into a corner, forcing Chinese companies to develop ways to get around the export restrictions or create their own chips.
"Instead of hindering China, these export restrictions on AI might be increasing China's AI capabilities by encouraging innovation," UCLA engineering and law professor John Villasenor said CNN via email. "It is either genuinely disruptive or dishonest, depending on Nvidia chips that were hoarded and other items prior to the export ban."
"It is a blow to pure reliance on competitive private markets without government partnership and national industrial policies," Sonnenfeld continued, referring to a "Sputnik-style disruption. "He is aware that DeepSeek has 50,000 cutting-edge processors that they "can't talk about, obviously, because it is against the export controls that the United States has put in place," Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang told CNBC. B's main market strategist, Art Hogan. Since there is no hard evidence to support DeepSeek's claims, Riley Wealth Management advised investors to treat them "with a grain of salt."
China asserts that it has developed the "Silver bullet, but it might be like the high school guy who claims to have a girlfriend, but she's just at another school," Hogan said over the phone, adding that Western economists have long doubted the accuracy of China's economic data. If DeepSeek had access to cutting-edge semiconductors, that would lend credence to the claim that export restrictions had to be strengthened. According to Mills, the enforcement of export restrictions has been inconsistent, and there is a "very active" underground market for luxury chips.
Mills remarked, "This has been a game of whack-a-mole." "There are still obvious gaps that must be filled." For instance, Mills emphasized the necessity of stricter enforcement and more flow limits of industry-leading computer chips.
Biden's US National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, has admitted that the export restrictions are still being worked out.
This procedure is iterative. Both they and we learn. At a fireside talk in May, Sullivan remarked, "We learn, they learn."
Sullivan added that China has attempted to circumvent export restrictions by portraying its AI as inevitable.
To essentially convey the message that "this is futile," the PRC has launched a large and unrelenting communication campaign. It is pointless to resist.
"We're going to violate these controls," Sullivan declared.
